Come and join us for our next Community Feast!

We are very pleased to announced our next Community Feast will take place on the 14th November at St Pancras Community Association. The event will run between 10am-1pm in the cafe area next to the main reception.

As with all our Community Feasts we will be discussing ways to reduce loneliness and isolation for older people in St Pancras and Somers Town. On the agenda at this meeting we will be talking about activities in December, Arts and Crafts in January and February and way to keep active during the winter months. It should be really good fun!

This event is open to anyone who is aged 60 and above living in the St Pancras and Somers Town Ward. A light lunch will be provided.

We are Ageing Better Partners Update October 2016

We have been out door knocking with the Community Researcher team from Somers Town Community Association

Since we launched our project we have knocked on the doors of over 250 residents living in St Pancras and Somers Town ward. We have been working with residents to identify people who may be at risk of being lonely and isolated.

We have been making friends

Partnerships are a crucial part of this project, so we’re really pleased to have worked with some of these amazing organisations already:

Agar Grove TMO, Age UK Camden, Argent, the British Library, Camden Community Connectors, Camden Council CIP Team (Agar Grove and Central Somers Town), Camden Council’s Housing Team, Hopscotch, The Mary Ward Centre, North London Cares, Camden & Islington’s Public Health Team, Regent High School, Somers Town Community Association, Somers Town Sports Activators, St Mary’s Church, St Pancras Community Centre, Third Age Project, Women in Health and lots more!

We have been hosting Community Feasts

The Community Feasts provide older people living in St Pancras and Somers Town the chance to get together, eat lovely food and contribute their ideas to the We Are Ageing Better project. To date we have run three Community Feast which took place on the 5th, 13th, and 27th October in locations across St Pancras and Somers Town. We have averaged around 20 local older people at each feast, which is a lot of ideas! Some of the most popular ideas so far include:

  • A film club- which they can in time run on their own at Basil Jellicoe Hall
  • A sing along session complete with song sheets
  • Trips out; a continuation of the coach trips currently run by Origin Housing
  • More exercises and sports session
  • Arts and craft sessions

Working together with participants, we’re about to start production of a calendar of local events in 2017. If you have any events that you’d like us to add to the calendar please email Sarah Hoyle on sarah@weareageingbetter.org.uk  before the 20th November.

Our thanks to the everyone who attended our first two Community Feasts on the 5th and 13th October. Both events where tremendous fun and very well attended.

Lots of great ideas came out of the Community Feasts. We discussed everything from accessible shopping centres to the best time to get a seat on the bus. We also talked about social activities including organising canal trips, trips to the theatre and visiting other Ageing Better projects across the UK, with a view to tackling loneliness and isolation amongst older people.

To ensure we keep the momentum going we have two more Community Feasts confirmed on:

Thursday 27th October: 12noon – 3pm Basil Jellicoe, Drummond Crescent, NW1 1LE At this event we will be discussing setting up a film club and activities to reduce loneliness and isolation during January and February. Hot food will be served.

Monday 14th November 10am – 1pm  St Pancras Community Centre, Plender Street,  NW1 0LG  At this event we will be discussing Christmas activities and ideas to reduce loneliness and isolation during January and February. Hot food will be served.

Anyone over 60 living in St Pancras and Somers Town is welcome to attend these events. Home cooked food will be provided by the amazing Liz from Somers Town Community Centre. Her Bread and Butter Pudding is the best!

Keep up to date with the project by following us on Twitter @we_ageing or calling Sarah on 020 7209 9333 or 07919 598 375

Collecting Food Memories: October Events

Over the last 3 months the We Are Ageing Better Team have been hard at work talking to older residents in St Pancras and Somers Town about their memories of the area, in particularly their food memories!  Some of the memories we have gathered include:

  • Eating Crepes from the New Horizon Crepe Stand in Charlton Street Market
  • Pork pies in Basil Jellicoe Hall. Veggie breakfast for £6.50 at the Somers Town Coffee House
  • Neck of lamb stew, roast breast of lamb, bacon & onion suet roll.
  • Pinner Fish and Chip Fridays

Everyone has memories of food they have eaten at a restaurant or with friends at home. To date we have knocked on the doors of 195 people living in Somers Town and St Pancras and have spoked to over 70 residents about the project. Talking about food is great fun and is the inspiration for our first two We Are Ageing Better Events that are taking place this autumn.

These free events will be a great chance to meet neighbours, find out more about the project and of course eat yummy food! Anyone over 60 who lives in Somers Town and St Pancras is welcome to join us.

The two events take place on:

Wednesday 5th October between 10am – 12noon , St Pancras Community Centre, 67 Plender Street, NW1 0LG

Thursday 13th October between 12noon – 3pm, Basil Jellicoe Hall, Drummond Crescent, NW1 1BS
